A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe. It occurs when the big toe pushes against the next toe, forcing the joint of the big toe to get larger and stick out. This condition is often associated with the misalignment of the bones of the foot.
A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe. It occurs when the big toe pushes against the next toe, forcing the joint of the big toe to get larger and stick out. This condition is often associated with the misalignment of the bones of the foot.
The most obvious symptom is the bony pump that can be seen and felt.
Pain or stiffness in your big toe.
Swelling
Discloration or redness.
An inability to move or bend your big toe.
Difficulty wearing certain types of shoes.
Numbness in or around your big toe.
Bunions develop for a variety of reasons or a combination of factors such as family history, abnormal bone structure, increased motion and shoe choice. Any time extra pressure is added to your big toe joint for a long period of time, the joint can be pushed out of its natural alignment and towards your other toes. It's important to point out that this normally occurs after years of applied pressure. Eventually, a bunion forms on your MTP joint when your body compensates for your toe being pushed out of its usual place.
Bunions generally can be left alone. We only advise surgery when they become painfull and begin to effect daily living.
Come in and see us if your bunion becomes painful and begins to effect your daily life.
